Kun vietimme mainitut kymmenen päivää telttaleirillä Inkoossa, Rikulla oli tavoitteena tehdä tulet aina ilman tulitikkuja. Hänellä oli mukanaan tulusrauta, taulaa ja piikiveä.

Riku osaa tehdä tulet näillä välileillä, jos vain sytykkeet ovat sopivat. Jos tehdään tulet ilman tikkuja, esivalmistelut ovat tärkeät. Sopivia sytykkeitä ovat koivun tai katajan tuohi, kuivat heinät tai kuusen alaoksat, osmankäämin patukan haituvat tai kuivat ja ohuet kiehiset. Ne pitää säilyttää kuivina, muuten ei tule tulta.

As we spend then days in medieval tent in Inkoo, Riku wanted to do camp fire without matches, by using tinder, flint and steel. He knows how to do it, and is very successful, if materials are dry enough etc. When making a fire without matches the preparations are very important. You need bey birch or juniper bark, dry hay, dry spruce branches or come cattail (typha, grows in the lakes), or dry wood chips or shavings.

One morning I watched how he really tried, but everything was damp after rainy night. Cattails smoked, but no fire.

Well, there was this Jonas Evertsson, also known as Edricus. We call him Ed. His passion is medieval camp living, specially fire making and carving and knives, specially sharpening them. And so Riku and Ed spend those ten days by our camp kitchen doing those manly stuff. As a result of that, we had plenty of kindlings!

Ed näytti myös, miten tehdään taulaakin parempaa sytykettä kankaasta. Sen nimi on englanniksi char cloth, sytykekangas voisi olla suomenkielinen vastine. Tämä metodi ei ole keskiaikainen, koska siihen tarvitaan metalliaski, mutta kyllä se aina tikunraapimisen voittaa!

Ed also showed how to make char cloth put of linen of some other vegetable tibet cloth. This method is not medieval, because a tin box is needed, but it beats the matches anyway!

Näin teet sytykekangasta / how to make car cloth:

1. Leikkaa kangas pieniksi paloiksi. Tässä mekon helmasta yli jäänyttä pellavaa.
1. Cut fabric into a small pieces. This white linen is a underdress left overs.

2. Laita tilkut metalliaskiin.
2. Lay them in tin box.

3. Laita aski tuleen.
3. Put tin box into a fire.

4. Askista alkaa nousta savua, kun kankaat hiiltyvät. Ne eivät siis varsinaisesti pala. Ilmiö on sama kuin hiiltä valmistettaessa. Askin pitää olla lähes ilmatiivis, jotta kankaat eivät pala. Se ei saa olla täysin ilmatiivis, muuten aski räjähtää.
4. Some smoke start to come out from the box, when cloth start to char. They are not actually burning. This is same what happens when charcoal is made. The tinderbox should be almost air tight, otherwise the cloths will burn inside it. It must not be totally air tight, cause it might explode.

5. Ota aski tulesta, ja muista, että se on kuuma!

5. Remove the tinderbox from fire. Notice: it is hot!

6. Kas, askin sisällä on mustaksi hiiltynyttä kangasta!

6. Oh look, there is black charred cloth inside the box!

7. Hiiltyneet kankaat ovat valmiita käytettäväksi.
7. Charred choths are ready to be used.

8. Ota pala piikiveä ja tulus. Iske kipinä, jo yksi kipinä riittää sytyttämään kankaan.
8. Take piece of a flint and you steel. Make a spark, even one spark is enough to make char cloth to smolder.
