Näin se tehdään: lannevaatteen kääriminen - katso kuvat ! / Braies and how they do it -pictures!

Lannevaate vauhdissa!
Loincloth in action!

Janilla on loistavat perustelut lähtien aina sanan braies alkuperästä: muinaislatinassa sana bracis tarkoittaa rullattua. Tämänkaltainen vaate on Janin mukaan kuvattu jo muinaisten roomalaisten yllä.
Kun katsoo keskiajan kuvalähteitä, kuten Maciejowski Bible noin aluksi,  niissä näkee miesten jalassa jotain, joka muodostaa halkion sivuun. Niinpä moni elävöittäjä ompeleekin pellavasta väljät pöksyt, joissa on se halkio ja joita kääritään rullalle. Miksi?

Enen pellavainen lannevaate on 120 X 150 , Rikun lannevaate on noin 150 x 100 cm. Itselleen sopivan koon ja käärimistavan löytää kuulemma kokeilemalla.

Tästä voi vaikka katsoa, mistä puhutaan. Kuvan pikkupöksyt ovat ommeltuja. Kuva: Gerry Embletonin kirjasta Medieval Military Costume s.33.

* * *
When we are talking about medieval man´s underwear, we do remember a shirt, the hose and some kind of breeches, often called braies. But let´s talk about loin cloth and rolling.

Finnish reenact or and historian Jani Hyväri has for years told his thoughts about medieval underclothing. He is convinced that they are not sewn breeches, but a loincloth rolled.
He has a believable argument for it, starting from the origin of word braies. In ancient latin word bracis means "rolled". According to him this kind of underpants was worn already by ancient romans.
If you look at medieval pictorial sources, like Majiejowsky Bible you can see several underpants with rolls and slits on side. So people make loose sewn pants which are rolled from the top and has a slit on side. Why?
I´m leaving each and everyone to think about this, but also want to show a loin cloth is rolled and how it looks just like on 13th and 14th century pictorial sources. Two ways to make it, two models, Ene and Riku, who has been wearing loincloth for several years.

Enes cloth is about 120 x 150 cm, Riku´s 100 X 150 cm. You will find your favorite size and way to tie by testing.

Ene ja malli A: 1. sido vyö sille korkeudelle, jonne haluat lannevaatteen tulevan.
Ene and model A: 1. tie a belt to the hight where you want you loincloth to reach.

2. Grab the middle or the cloth and pull it under the belt.

Toimi kuten kohdassa 2.
3. Grab the middle of the other edge and take it between your legs. Do as on section 2.

4. Levitä kangasta vyötärönauhan alle.
4. Spread the cloth under the belt.

5. Nyt etu ja takaliepeet kohtaavat.
5. Now the front and back pieces meet.

6. Join the edges and fold them. You can roll them and leave it longer or roll it to relative short. Or if you wish, don't roll and just wear your hose on them.

7. Another, really short model you get if you take the edges and bring them crossed to the waistband. This model looks like Jesus-model.

8. Helpoin tapa lyhentää lahkeet on sitoa helmat solmuun.
8. The easiest way to shorten the leg part it to tie a knot.

9. Kääri lopuksi yläosa nauhan ympärille.
9. Finally roll the top around the waistband.

10. Nauha jää näkyviin etu- ja takaliepeiden yhtymäkohdassa. Voit sitoa lahkeiden kiinnitysnyörit siihen.
10. The waistband stays visible between front and back part. You can tie your hose points to it.

11. Lannevaate ja lahkeet puettuna.
11. Loincloth and hose dressed.

Malli B: 1. Aloita pukemalla lannevaate päällesi saunapyykeen tapaan.
Model B: 1. Start by wearing the cloth like a towel:

Ensin yksi reuna, sitten toinen
First one edge, then the other.

2. Sido vyö (esimerkiksi lautanauha) siihen paikkaan, johon haluat rullata lannevaatteen.
2. Tie a belt, for example tablet woven band to the hight where you want to roll your loin cloth.

3. Kumarru ja tartu takaosan liepeeseen. Tuo se jalkojen alta eteen.
3. Bend over, grab the edge of the back part. Bring it to front.

4. Sido lieve nauhan alle.
4. Tie it under the band.

5. Jätä lahkeet pitkiksi tai rullaa:
5. Lieve leg part as it is or roll it:

Looking good!!

B-model can even be lowered to ankles and pull back up without opening the package.

Ps. Tiedän mitä ajattelette: miten näiden kanssa käydään vessassa? Pojat sanovat, että helposti... miehet kyllä tietävät mitä tehdä...
Ps. I know what you are thinking: can you go to toilet? Boys say easily... men, you will know what to do...

PPS; hahaa, they say that cloth can be used also as a towel or table cloth, but do consider, in which order...

  1. Aha! B-menetelmän kanssa onkin ollut vähän ongelmia. Pitää testata A seuraavalla kerralla.

  2. Very interesting! Say thanks to the guys for being brave and letting their photos loose on the internet. ;)

I've only experimented with roll-topped braies before, but not with ones that are entirely wrapped. (My usual pattern is similar to the one here: http://amostpeculiarmademoiselle.blogspot.co.uk/2011/05/wardrobe-plans.html ). I'm amazed how well the loincloth-like version mimic the manuscript images -- in particular the gap for the hose ties and the slits seen in the lower edges of the braies' legs (both of which are rarely seen in reproductions).

Also, I wanted to say that Riku's method of wrapping the loincloth is how girls in our group wrap the skirts of their dresses when doing very manual things (or *ahem* playing tag / British bulldog). It looks like the girl in green here (MS Bodl. 264, f. 130v): http://bodley30.bodley.ox.ac.uk:8180/luna/servlet/detail/ODLodl~1~1~33741~105851:Romance-of-Alexander-?sort=Shelfmark

  3. Well done!
I was thinking about the type B braies for quite a while now. The only difference I have is the lack of belt under the roll. I have been thinking about the 'suspender belt' for the hose though.

  4. Hi!
Riku wears a tablet woven band to attach hose with type B, on top of roll. Hose can also be tied to belt under roll.

  5. I can document a buckled belt being worn in the casing (the fabric roll at the top) to keep braies up.

Contact me if you need this.

  6. Thank you SO much for writing this and for putting up so many detailed photographs! We work as Medieval crafts people and Charlie demonstrates how to make a Wattle and daub panel, for a house, by taking off his hose and working in his braies - for the last 7 years he has made different loose 'pants' to wear with them but they never quite looked 'right' and now this evening he has tried this method and he looks 'right'! We will take some pictures to show you! Karen Slade and Charlie Slade - Company of Artisans, UK
