Mustaa mustalla ja muita vaikeuksia / Black on black and other difficulties

Talven ehdottomasti hankalin tilaustyö. The most difficult work of the season.

Riku toi avuksi otsalampun. Älä naura siellä (Ilona nauroi kun näki). Ilman otsalamppua siitä ei olisi tullut mitään.
* * *
Winter is difficult time for handcrafted. No, not the coldness, but the darkness that does not end.
This winters hardest item to make is a black lipipipe, a hood with long tail. Orange lining, black wool on outer layer. I made it as a joined project with Elsa, who lives in Germany. I made the sewing parts, she did the embroidery. The hoods new owner lives in Sweden and is a member of SCA (Society of Creative Anachronism). She is a member in order of the Rose, that´s why embroidery has roses.

I decided to make a tablet woven edge. In the darkness (you see, there is no proper light even on daytime cause this is Finland).... what was I thinking?
Riku wanted to help and brought me a head light. Don't laugh (Ilona did when she saw my working lamp). Without it I just could not worked.

Että näin. Like this.

Otsalampulla. With head light.

 Ilman otsalamppua. Without it.

No minä kudoin reunaa yli 20 tuntia, koska työ on erittäin hidasta.

So I wove the edge over 20 hours, cause it is a slow work. Black yarn on orange.. I showed the hood to my friend Uta, who´s work is perfect, and I saw her face. Black stitches on orange wool were screaming "look at me I am here".
Believe me, it was a lot faster to undo this edge than make it. With scissors it took less than a minute!

Ehkäpä vähän helpompi väri... ei! EI!!! Liian kirjava!
Hmm.. maybe something anot... NO! Too much color.

Siispä palataan takaisin ruotuun. Käänsin reunan ja huolittelin villalangalla.
So back to basics. Edging and finishing with woolen yarn and overcast stitch.

Kirjonnat tulivat Saksasta. Silkkiä silkillä. Leikkasin palat ja sovitin huppuun. Yliluottelin paikalleen.
Embroidery came from Germany: silk on silk. I cut the pieces and sew them to their place.

Tinanapit lasihelmellä ja ruusut paikallaan. Tin buttons with red glass beads. And roses on their own place.

Tällainen siitä tuli. And this is how it looks.

Seuraava hankaluus odottikin jo: 56 lautaa, erittäin ohut lanka.
Next trouble: 56 tablets, thin woolen yarn.

Näin iso pakkaa on jo vaikea käsitellä. It is quite hard to deal with so many tablets.

Siksi jaoin reunalaudat eri pakalle. 40 kuviolautaa on jaettu neljäksi kymmenen laudan ryhmäksi.
That is why I separated the edges and 40 pattern tablets are divided to groups of ten.

Ohje on pientä pränttiä ja lautoja käännetään itsenäisesti, eteen ja taakse. Olen piirtänyt ohjeeseen viivat, joilla erotan 10 laudan ryhmät.
The pattern is small print and tablets turn individually forward and backwards. I have drawn lines to divide all groups of ten cards.

Yarns are attached to a small wooden stick, which is attached to carpenters clam. Now that there is not a knot at the end, the yarns and tablets don't clang to each other that easy.

Mutta! Otsalamppu päässä, rivi riviltä käännös käännökseltä tihrustaen ja sitten kiinnitys toisessa päässä räjähtää! Argh! Laudat sekaisin! Paniikki!

But! Head light on, row by row and pick by pick I follow the pattern and suddenly the other end is not anymore attached to the clam! Panic! Chaos!

Mutta lopulta: tuleehan siitä sentään jotain! Snartemo V työn alla.
But finally: it starts to look like Snartemo V!

And finally: there is this last challenge. It is a miniature pincher Tikru (Tigger) , weight four kilos. And it uses is´t excellent capacity to smell to trace all silks and wools of this house. This is what she does to them.

Itse viattomuus... suunnittelee taas jotain juonia.
The master criminal herself, innocent look on her face, planning yet another cunning plan...

Tikru tykkää silkistä. She likes silks.
Eräänä päivänä Tikru haki tarvikkeita kässähuoneesta ja murskasi muovisen juomakuppinsa siinä sivussa. Langat kulkivat keittiöstä olohuoneen kautta makuuhuoneeseen, pari kertaa sängyn ympäri ja siitä takaisin olohuoneeseen.
She even extermined her own water bowl (that green stuff). Notice ex-tablet weaving. Yarns go from kitchen to bedroom, twice around the bed and back to living room.

Ja tältä uurastuksen tulokset sitten näyttävät.  And they look like that...

..but I love my puppy dearly!

  2. Thank you so much for sharing the pictures of your tablet weaving and the story of all your challenging work with dark threads. Your new puppy is a sweetheart , even if he tangles up your yarn!

  3. Thank you so much for showing the photos of your snartemo tablet weaving. Do you use weights on the ends to tension the warp? Your new puppy is a sweetheart, well worth the yarn tangles!

  4. Hi! No, I don't have weights. I weave with backstrap, or actually i attach the other end to my belt. I never use those big looms... In some cases end weights would be good thing, and specially with this band I could have used them. Some of the yarns get a a lot of twist and opening them takes time. If I had weights, I could have opened the twist only on them. No I have opened the whole warp loop by loop (ig you look at the picture on blog, you see that wooden stick and yarns with knots. The warp is tied so that every tablet´s yarns are on two loops. Normally, on thinner bands, I cut the yarns to certain measure and have a knot at the end. But not this time.
