Minulla on unelma. I have a dream.

This is not my experiment, this is part of Elina´s veil.

Me suomalaiset olemme olleet ylpeitä Neulakon Elinan panoksesta tässä tutkimuksessa.
Isiksen koko huntu-gradu löytyy Medieval Silkworkin sivulta kohdasta article, Elinan hunnun valmistuminen Neulakosta.

Nämä ovat Piian tekemiä malliröyhelöitä.
These are the samples Piia made.

Kurssilla ollut Minna teki näin uskomattoman hienon työn! Tykkään!
This was made by Minna: it is incredible! Love it!

Teimme kaikenlaisia kokeiluja: näin syntyy herkkä o-poimu korvatulppien avulla.
We made all kind of experiments: this is how to make cute o-frills with help of earplugs.

Tässä toinen sievä malli: vastalaskoksia.
Another pretty version, done by pleating.

Jenni näytti miten huntuja tärkätään ja toi malliksi oman myllynkivikauluksensa.
Jenni showed how to starch and used her incredible collar as sample.

My wedding veil.

It was about three years ago.  I was getting married and I found a picture of the most beautiful veil. I wrote to a lady who made it to ask, how it was made. I never got the answer, but the dream alived all these years.
I decided to ask is someone here in Finland would know and asked Elina. She started making tests that time. And as we now know, she made a beautiful frilled veil, and we have seen her wearing it during many fine moments.
Later the lady with beautiful veil wrote a paper about it to a university. And now my own dream about the frilled veil is one step closer. You see, we had a two day course.

Teachers Elina and Piia told us about the history of the veils, who wore them and when and what was them social status. And also we spoka about possible techiques of making them.
Frilled veils were fashionalble for about 400 years, but there is about two finds remained, so there is no information about them.
Veils can be seen in paintigs and statues and there are mentionings in texts like testaments.
Isis made a huge work stuidying these wonderful textiles and we here in Finland are super proud of our dear and fine Elina´s part in the study.
You can find all about that in Medieval Silkwork-blog / articles and Neulakko.

This weekend, which ment a lot to me, has taught that frilled veils are beautiful and yes, they can be made. And I personally want to remember, that they are valuable, special and expentive assessories of noble ladies, and they they should not be worn everyday doing tasks. The veil deserves an event worth it´s value.
But now we can expect a parade of frilled veils. We have already settled a gathering of rally of frilled veils to Turku Medieval market next summer. So if you have a frilled veil, meet us at market Saturday 30th June at Merry Swan tailorshop!

ps. My wedding veil was wonderful, even I did not have frilled veil:  my veil is fine linen, embroidered with silver and it has 280 small pearls sewn to it.

  1. Hunnut on kyllä kova sana, joskin mekon pitämiseen näissä unisexvaatteissa vedän itse rajan ;) Tuosta ylimmäisestä varsinkin tulee jotenkin vastustamattomasti mieleen sormustinkukka.
